A 17-year-old from Cache, Oklahoma, has been charged with first-degree murder after police say he fatally shot a 15-year-old in a bathroom at the Wingstop on NW Cache Road in Lawton, according to court records reviewed by Texoma's Homepage.
Jaylen Carter is being held in Comanche County's Juvenile Detention Center on a $500,000 bond. The victim, identified by detectives as Dominik Papatu, was found deceased in the restaurant's bathroom with an apparent gunshot wound to the right side of the face.
What the affidavit alleges
According to the arrest affidavit, Lawton Police were dispatched to Wingstop after a report of a deceased teenager in the bathroom. Detectives say they later interviewed an eyewitness who claimed he and Carter had gone to the restaurant to meet Papatu so Carter could buy "drank" — a term the affidavit says refers to codeine cough syrup.
The witness told detectives that while the three were in the bathroom, Carter and Papatu both pulled out guns and were "passing the guns to one another like they were playing with a new toy," the affidavit states. The witness said Carter then pointed his gun at Papatu, demanded Papatu's gun, and shot Papatu when he refused. The witness said Carter then turned the gun on him and he left the restaurant.
Detectives say they obtained Wingstop surveillance footage that corroborated the witness's account of the three entering the bathroom and the order in which they left.
Arrest
Comanche County Sheriff's deputies located Carter in Cache and escorted him to the Lawton Police Department, according to the affidavit. Detectives say Carter told them he had taken sleeping medication, and no formal interview was conducted.
All individuals charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
