The first positive case of rabies in Wichita Falls for 2026 has been confirmed, the city said in a notice from Animal Services. Officials said the case involved a skunk and urged residents to take precautions to protect their families and pets.

Recommended precautions

  • Keep dogs, cats and ferrets up to date on rabies vaccinations.
  • Avoid unfamiliar, aggressive, stray or wild animals.
  • Teach children not to touch stray or wild animals.
  • Report all bites and scratches immediately.

Anyone who has been bitten or scratched should seek medical attention right away. According to the city, symptoms typically appear one to three months after exposure, though the incubation period can range from five days to over a year. Officials said rabies is fatal once symptoms appear but is preventable with prompt treatment.

Residents who observe an animal acting strangely or aggressively are asked to contact Wichita Falls Animal Control at (940) 761-7824.
