Wichita County Tax Assessor-Collector Tommy Smyth is warning residents about a traffic ticket scam circulating by email.

Smyth said the messages appear to come from a "Traffic Division" of a Harris County District Court and tell the recipient that court-ordered compliance is required and that payment in full must be made. The email includes a link the message claims goes to the "official court payment system."

His office learned of several county residents receiving the notice Friday and over the weekend, Smyth said.

"The notice is flawed throughout and advises the recipient that impending enforcement action is imminent," Smyth said in an email to the Times Record News on Monday.

Smyth said the email is not addressed to the recipient by name, which he said is indicative of a bulk or mass email. He advised any recipients not to respond.

"There is an old cliche in law enforcement about when something does not pass the smell test, and this notice does not smell right for more than one reason," Smyth said.
