A second case of rabies this year has been confirmed in Vernon, according to the Vernon Police Department and the Wilbarger Humane Society.
The Wilbarger Humane Society notes that rabies is fatal once symptoms appear, but preventable with the proper precautions. The group is urging pet owners to update vaccinations and to avoid contact with wild or stray animals.
If a bite or scratch happens
Residents who are bitten or scratched by an unfamiliar animal should wash the wound with soap and water for 15 minutes and seek medical care.
