The City of Lawton announced on Monday, May 4, 2026, that Craig Akard will serve as its next Chief of Police, with the appointment taking effect May 11, according to Texoma's Homepage.
Akard has more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement and city government. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy (Class 263) and previously served as the city's Human Resources Director, overseeing personnel systems, labor relations and policy development across departments.
During his earlier service with the Lawton Police Department, Akard rose through the ranks to Captain of Patrol Operations and Criminal Investigations, where he helped lead critical incident response and oversaw major investigative functions.
Lawton City Manager John Ratliff said the selection followed a deliberate review process.
"This was not a decision we took lightly. The position of Chief of Police is critical to the safety, trust, and overall well-being of our community," Ratliff said. "After a thorough and thoughtful process, we are confident Craig Akard is the right leader for this position."
Akard said his priorities as chief will include transparency, communication and continued collaboration with both department personnel and the public.
"While law enforcement has faced challenges in recent years, it remains a profession rooted in service, integrity, and commitment to community," Akard said. "I am honored to have the opportunity to lead this department and serve alongside the dedicated men and women who work every day to protect and serve the Lawton community."
Akard said his goal is to build partnerships and trust with Lawton residents and to reinforce the city as a safe, welcoming community.
