U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, filed legislation Monday that would rename U.S. Highway 287 in honor of President Donald Trump and upgrade the route to Interstate 47, according to a statement from the senator's office.

The measure, titled the Interstate 47 Future Interstate Act, was introduced Monday, May 11. U.S. 287 is the second-longest three-digit U.S. highway in the country, behind only U.S. 281. The corridor spans roughly 1,791 miles, running from Port Arthur, Texas, to Choteau, Montana, and passing through Oklahoma, Colorado and Wyoming on the way.

The route runs through Wichita Falls and is a primary north-south travel corridor for Texoma residents.

"My bill will upgrade one of our nation's longest highways to a future interstate and save more than $5 BILLION in travel costs, all while honoring the most effective and influential president of our lifetime," Cornyn said in a post on X.

Under the bill, the highway would be redesignated as Interstate 47, a number Cornyn linked to Trump's status as the 47th president. The legislation would still need to clear the Senate and the House before being signed into law.
