Christ Academy student Maria Pojoga has qualified for the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix after advancing through the Red River Regional Science Fair, according to KFDX.

Pojoga said it is her third year competing at the regional level and the first time she has qualified for the international fair.

Her project examines how neurons in the visual cortex respond to specific images and orientations, drawing on prior work conducted in non-human primates. She compared the underlying mechanism to recognizing a song heard briefly in a store without remembering its source.

"It gives you a chance to show what you really want to do, what you want to like, show the world," Pojoga said of opportunities like the science fair.

The Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair is one of the largest pre-college science competitions in the world.
